Imagine my surprise when I found myself firing a smokeless wood kiln, fired with scrap neighborhood trees and other saved-from-the-landfill wood, in the middle of suburban Maryland, just a 10 minute walk from the Metro! Loren Scherbak has been a wonderful collaborator, and supportive friend and potter as well. Her bourry box kiln, built by Donovan Palmquist and Al in September of 2005, is a dream to fire, responsive and capable of so much more than we can even imagine. Our firings tend to be around 48 hours, including a 12 hour soak at ^10-11. The Big Savage is kind to glazed and bare work, and boasts heavy ash spots along the bagwall and sides, plus subtle nooks deeper in the shelves.
