Between Swanville and Belfast, Maine, deep in the woods, off of a little dirt and gravel road, lies the pottery and home of Jody Johnstone. She fires an intense 8 days each spring and fall, preceded by 4 days of loading, and followed by a good week of cooling. Her anagama techniques come directly from her apprenticeship in Bizen, Japan, and her style is clearly closer to Japanese than renegade American. I've never seen a tighter anagama stack, or seen more beautiful blues and purples along the floor where side-stoking occurs. It was a treat and a pleasure to be part of her 4-person crew, along with her regulars, Becca Van Fleet and David Orser.
