Gifted with
a 2005 summer residency at Pottery
Northwest, Seattle, I not only experienced city living for the first
time, but I fell in love with a city and a studio.....clay's best kept secret!
Wally Bivins runs an excellent urban studio which is both inspirational and
down-to-business, and manages to work in clay, as well. His sense of humour
makes the place purr. I can't thank him enough for welcoming me into the PNW
experience, and for his continued support. Alya Khan and Damian Grava were also
instrumental in my PNW experience, from showing me the great nooks and crannies
of the city to including me in soda firings. I first tried tried hydrogen reduction
with Damian, which was a first for both of us, and he has since taken off with
the process.
I loved the Seattle pace.....from my morning walks from Capitol Hill to Victrola
Coffee and down to Seattle Center, daily lunches at the International Fountain,
and evening strolls with my housemate Helen and her dog Georgia, Seattle fit
my personality and habits, and my work progressed nicely that summer. I explored
leaving the wrap of my mentor and friend, Jack Troy, and found much support
and inspiration.
